Torrevieja is often called “Costa del Yorkshire”, as there are about 4,000 permanent residents of British origin here. At the same time, there are at least as many Russian residents here. The Spaniards themselves, mostly from Madrid, also choose Torrevieja over other resorts because of affordable housing prices and a wonderful climate. Because of that, Torrevieja has also been nicknamed “the beach of Madrid”.
The population is just over 84,000 inhabitants. In the summer months, the number of residents increases to 400,000 with the arrival of tourists and seasonal homeowners who come to Torrevieja to spend their holidays.
Only 30 years ago, Torrevieja was a small village that based its living on salt mining and fishing. Today, the region’s economy is primarily based on construction and real estate. In Torrevieja there are currently more than 70 construction companies and about 50 real estate agencies.
The cost of apartments in new residential complexes starts from 100,000 euros. In general, Torrevieja is considered a safe city, and there are no “bad” neighbourdhoods.
Some of the other advantages of Torrevieja include proximity to Alicante-Elche airport (40 minutes by car), excellent medical care as there are two hospitals plus private and public clinics, about 250,000 m2 of sports facilities and, finally, international British schools for bilingual children.
